Welcome back!
I'm so happy to kick off the new year with such a wonderful class! With a shorten week this week, we focused on some mini projects. In Writing, we learned about idioms and talked about how to make SMART goals. We used what we learned about SMART goals to create both personal and class resolutions. In Math, we dove head first into fractions. It would be great for students to see some real life applications of fractions so any time you can incorporate that into your home life would be wonderful! A great example of fractions is cooking so try a new recipe with your students and put their fraction knowledge to the test. We will be collecting Easter brunch recipes in the upcoming weeks so be on the look out for a letter home. We began a social studies unit this week. We are learning about how to be a good citizens and the rights that citizens have. We will be doing a research project later in the month about some important historical figures who helped fight for civil rights. As a class we discussed the handwriting expectations. We will be expecting students to use cursive more for finals drafts, essay questions, and spelling test. We will be practicing more at school and it will help students to encourage them to use cursive at home as well! Have a great weekend! Ms. Cyz

Here is the math review key for the worksheet tonight. Happy studying!
Last week in our classroom we did so much! Language arts this week focused on the court systems and we read a story called The Trial of Cardigan Jones. The students talked about what makes up our court system and how jurors must be unbiased to have a fair trial. We are continuing to work on our writing skills during writer’s workshop. This week we tackled how to write a conversation in a narrative paragraph. I’m so very happy to report that the class average for our spelling test this week was 85%; continue practicing hard at home!
In science we learned about vertebrates and classifying animals. The students were in charge of their own procedures to conduct an experiment that answered the question how to make a backbone. Students used gummy lifesavers, pipe cleaners, and noodles to create backbone models. The students were filled with different ideas on how to tackle the experiment and we had a great class discussion about all the parts of a backbone.
Math has been a whirlwind this week! We have learned about equal group number stories. Students were encouraged to create arrays to help them solve equal group number stories. Students also learned about equal-group sharing number stories. We also introduced both multiplication and division, which we will be exploring more this week
In social studies we continued our discussion about communities. Student thought about how their communities have changed over time and they shared ideas about who helps make their community great!
In religion we had an in depth conversation about the Lord’s Prayer. Student talked about forgiveness and how we can be more like Jesus by showing those around us forgiveness.
This week is a short week but we will still be doing so much! We are introducing multiplication facts; it is important this week for students to be practicing these facts at home.
Here in third grade we love to do brain breaks! What is a brain break you ask? It's a time for students to take a quick pause from academics and recharge so they can stay sharp. In room 2 our favorite site to visit for a brain break is a website called Go Noodle. They have funny videos that help get the kids moving and give us the opportunity to be silly. If you'd like to see what go noodle is about for yourself visit the site here: https://www.gonoodle.com/s/jcyz. If 5 or more people sign up for go noodle our class can get some free noodle swag. Happy dancing!

Welcome to 3rd grade! My name is Ms. Cyz and I am a third grade teacher at St. Francis Xavier! I'm so excited you've decided to learn more about our classroom.
Let me start by sharing some information about myself professionally and personally. This is my first year teaching and I’m excited about what the school year holds! I recently graduate from the University of Iowa-Go Hawkeyes! I majored in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Language Arts and Reading. While I lived in Iowa City, I worked on a local daycare and volunteered at the Children’s Museum. I grew up in the area. I went to Lyons Township High School. In high school I ran cross country and played soccer competitively. I enjoy spending time with my family that includes my parents and my three brothers as well as my two cats and dog. I love to read and am constantly finding new books!
This year in 3rd grade we are doing a lot of new things that include a Responsive classroom approach to management, a new Language Art curriculum, and the active use of I-Pads in the classroom. We will be having a classroom blog and each student will be in charge of contributing to it once a week. I will be also using class dojo and the reminder app for the classroom; instructions for both apps will be sent home this week. It’s a very exciting year and can’t wait to begin my teaching journey here!
